On October 24, 1971, Amarillo, Texas was the site of the race for the NHRA Top Fuel World Championship. Don Garlits red lighted away a 6.55 blast in the final against Gerry Glenn in the Schultz and Glenn slingshot. Glenn took his only NHRA Top Fuel World title with a 6.59 at 227.27 miles per hour in the front engined car.
