The Pontiac Firebird Funny Car of Del Worsham from Chino Hills, California, could only manage a best of 5.03 at 271.98 m.p.h. during qualifying at Gainesville to take the number eleven spot on the ladder. Worsham battled his way to the final on race day though, where he met John Force for all the marbles. A holeshot aided 4.97, 296.05 blast gave Worsham the win in the Funny Car final over Force’s close 4.97, 304.36 m.p.h. with his Ford Mustang.
